The mud-free system is an integrated equipment system centered on solid-liquid separation, harmless waste treatment, and resource recovery. Its components are adjusted according to drilling conditions (oil-based/water-based mud) and processing scale. The core equipment can be divided into four main categories: pretreatment unit, solid-liquid separation unit, conveying unit, and auxiliary control unit, as detailed below:
Pretreatment Unit
Mud Receiving Tank: Temporarily stores waste mud returned from the wellhead. Equipped with an agitator to prevent solid particles from settling and caking, it can also add demulsifiers, flocculants, and other agents to prepare for subsequent separation.
Screening Equipment (Vibrating Screen): As the first step in pretreatment, it removes larger drill cuttings and rock fragments (particle size ≥ 74μm) from the mud, preventing large particles from clogging subsequent equipment and reducing the separation load.
Core Solid-Liquid Separation Units
Centrifuges: Divided into horizontal screw centrifuges and disc centrifuges, these utilize centrifugal force to separate fine-particle solid phases (2~74μm in diameter) from the liquid phase in slurry. They are key equipment for treating finely dispersed slurry, and the moisture content of the separated solid phase can be reduced to below 20%.
Filter Press Equipment: Including chamber filter presses and plate and frame filter presses, these use high-pressure extrusion to squeeze out the liquid phase from the slurry, forming a dry cake. Suitable for treating high-viscosity, high-solids-content slurry, the moisture content of the cake can be controlled at 15%~25%, facilitating subsequent transportation or resource utilization.
Cyclone Separator (Desander/Desilter): For medium-sized solid particles, this equipment achieves solid-liquid separation through cyclone centrifugation. It is often used in conjunction with centrifuges to improve overall separation efficiency.

Conveying and Transfer Unit
Slurry Pump / Screw Pump: Responsible for conveying mud between various equipment. Screw pumps are suitable for high-viscosity mud, while slurry pumps are suitable for conditions with high sand content, ensuring continuous system operation.
Screw Conveyor / Belt Conveyor: Transports the separated dry mud cake to the silo or transport vehicle, achieving automated transfer and reducing manual operation.
Filtrate Collection Tank: Stores the separated liquid phase for subsequent purification and reuse or compliant discharge.
Auxiliary Control Unit
Chemical Dosing System: Includes chemical storage tanks, metering pumps, and mixers, precisely adding flocculants, demulsifiers, filter aids, etc., optimizing solid-liquid separation. For oily mud, an oil-removing agent dosing device is also provided.
Drying Equipment (Optional): Such as a drill cuttings dryer, further reducing the oil content of drill cuttings separated from oil-based mud (can be reduced to below 3%) to meet environmental disposal standards.
Intelligent Control System: Equipped with a PLC control cabinet and online monitoring instruments (sensors for moisture content, solids content, and oil content), it monitors system operating parameters in real time, automatically adjusts equipment conditions, and achieves intelligent and unmanned operation.
Exhaust Gas Treatment Equipment (Optional): For volatile gases generated during the treatment process, it is equipped with an activated carbon adsorption device or a flare combustion system to prevent gas pollution.
Supplementary Notes:
Water-based Mud Treatment System: Centered on a vibrating screen + centrifuge + filter press, focusing on solid-phase drying and liquid-phase reuse;
Oil-based Mud Treatment System: Requires the addition of a drill cuttings dryer and solvent recovery device to achieve oil recovery and compliant disposal of drill cuttings, resulting in a more complex equipment configuration.
